Deosai National Park 2nd Highest Plateau

Deosai, “The Land of Giants”, is the world’s 2nd highest plateau after Tibetan Plateau. It is situated in Gilgit-Baltistan territory of Pakistan. Some of its part falls in Skardu District while the remaining falls in Astore District. The total area covered by Deosai is 3000 square kilometers. The average elevation across the plateau is 4114 meters. In 1993, it was declared as a National Park so there is no hunting allowed neither any commercial accommodation activity is allowed. One of the most famous attractions of Deosai is “Sheosar Lake”.
Deosai National Park is famous for its rich flora and fauna. It is only accessible for a few months and rest of the year it remains snow bound and can’t be visited due to harsh weather. Deosai is home to a variety of wildlife including Himalayan Brown Bear, Snow Leopard, Red Fox and many more. The most interesting animal found in Deosai is Golden Marmot which is famous for mysterious calls. One interesting phenomena about Deosai is that the birds make their nest on ground because whole plateau is above the tree line.
Visitors can camp at specific points including Sheosar Lake, Bara Pani and Chota Pani. The most famous camping spot is Bara Pani where a wildlife department check post is also present. Previously there was a scary wooden suspension bridge to cross the river at Bara Pani but now a concrete bridge has been made making the crossing relatively easy. One should be prepared for unpredictable weather anytime because Deosai weather can change in a jiffy. In case of doing camping ar Deosai, make sure that the camps are wind proof and rain proof because strong winds and constant rain is common in Deosai.
Deosai opens around late June every year and remains accessible until late October. The best month to visit Deosai is August when the local flora is in full bloom and most of Deosai is covered with red flowers. It can only be accessed on a 4×4 vehicle because of the terrain. Most people cross Deosai from Astore side through Chilum Chowki (because of less ascend) and exit from Skardu side to get maximum exposure of the beautiful landscape.
